AIIB to support road improvement projects in Uzbekistan
The Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan has announced ongoing discussions with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to implement new infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the country’s road network.

According to the ministry, Chairman of the Committee for Highways under the Ministry of Transport, Jamshid Tursunov, met with an AIIB delegation led by Konstantin Limitovskiy, Head of the Investment Operations Department. The meeting focused on evaluating current road development initiatives supported by the bank and exploring future areas of cooperation.
Tursunov expressed his gratitude for the bank’s partnership in executing large-scale strategic projects in Uzbekistan. In particular, both parties reviewed the progress of the reconstruction of a 78-kilometer section (from kilometer 150 to 228) of the A380 highway, which connects Guzar, Bukhara, Nukus, and Beyneu.
The discussions also included agreements on the complete overhaul of 516.1 kilometers of local public roads, including 328.1 kilometers in the Republic of Karakalpakstan and 188 kilometers in the Khorezm region. Both sides affirmed their intention to expand cooperation on future projects.
A loan agreement between Uzbekistan and the AIIB remains in force until June 30, 2026. The project to reconstruct the A380 highway’s 150–228 kilometer section was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers, with the construction phase set to last five years – two years for completion and three years for warranty, technical supervision, and maintenance.
As part of the project, substantial progress has already been made:
- Asphalt pavement removal has been completed on 63.36 kilometers (81%) of the right lane and 55.03 kilometers (70%) of the left lane.
- A 25 cm thick sand-gravel road base layer has been laid on 63.30 kilometers (81%) of the right lane and 44.04 kilometers (56%) of the left lane.
- A 20 cm thick top layer of M-75 grade cement concrete mixture has been applied on 63.3 kilometers (81%) of the right lane and 42.51 kilometers (55%) of the left lane.
These developments underscore the growing partnership between Uzbekistan and the AIIB in modernizing critical transport infrastructure across the country.
