Four major Western nations recognize Palestinian state
The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal formally recognized the State of Palestine on Sunday, citing frustration over the ongoing war in Gaza and the need to advance a two-state solution.

The move brings the four Western countries – traditionally close allies of Israel – into alignment with more than 140 nations that support the Palestinians’ aspiration for an independent state carved from the occupied territories.
Britain’s decision carries particular symbolic weight, given its historic role in the creation of modern Israel after World War II.
“Today, to revive the hope of peace for Palestinians and Israelis, and to advance a two-state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognizes the State of Palestine,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said. “The man-made humanitarian crisis in Gaza is reaching new depths. The Israeli government’s relentless bombardment, the recent offensive, and the starvation and devastation are utterly intolerable.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney framed his country’s recognition as a step toward strengthening those seeking peaceful coexistence and defeating Hamas. “This in no way legitimizes terrorism, nor is it a reward for it,” he stressed.
Portugal’s Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel described the recognition as “a fundamental line of Portuguese foreign policy.” Speaking at Portugal’s permanent mission to the United Nations in New York, he said: “Portugal advocates the two-state solution as the only path to a just and lasting peace. A ceasefire is urgent.”
France and other countries are expected to follow suit this week at the UN General Assembly in New York.
The United States, Israel’s closest ally, did not immediately comment on the decision by three of its partners to recognize Palestine. President Donald Trump has previously stated his opposition to such a move.
