On September 24, ahead of the Carabao Cup third-round match against Huddersfield, Manchester City manager Josep Guardiola praised Uzbek defender Abdukodir Khusanov, expressing confidence that his transfer will be among the club’s best signings in recent years.

“He can play in central defense and in any position across the back line, except on the left… Yes, he may not create many chances in attack, but his game is very reliable and stable. His physical attributes and recovery pace remind me of Kyle [Walker] in his prime,” Guardiola said as quoted by the club on X (Twitter).

The coach voiced confidence that Khusanov will become a key player for Manchester City and remain at the club for a long time.

“He is very attentive, still very young, eager to learn. Against strong and serious opponents, he has shown really excellent football.

“Despite his youth, he first adapted in France after moving from Uzbekistan, then quickly settled into our squad during a tough season. When everything goes perfectly, adapting is easy. But for us, it was different. He has been absorbing all the movements and schemes with incredible speed.

“I think you’ll soon realize he is the best player the club has signed in recent years. This guy will stay at Manchester City for a long time,” the Spanish coach stressed.

Abdukodir Khusanov joined Manchester City in January 2025 from French club Lens for €40 million. Last season, he struggled to secure a starting spot due to strong competition, but this season he has started four consecutive matches, showing consistent performances. Initially a central defender, he has been moved to the right side of defense.
