Syrdarya to launch construction of major reservoir to boost agricultural output
Syrdarya region will begin building a new 100 million–cubic meter reservoir next year as part of efforts to expand irrigation capacity and strengthen agricultural productivity. The project, named Sultonhovuz, will be located in Bayaut district and is expected to support double cropping across several areas.

The decision was announced during a session of the Syrdarya Regional Council of People’s Deputies attended by the president. Once completed, the reservoir will allow farmers in Bayaut, Gulistan, Saykhunabad, Syrdarya and Mirzaabad districts to grow crops twice a year on a combined 110,000 hectares of land.
In parallel, authorities plan to improve land conditions by gradually clearing 16,000 kilometers of drainage canals throughout the region. Officials also highlighted that around 200,000 hectares of land in Syrdarya suffer from moderate to severe salinization. To address this, the president ordered the launch of a pilot project on soil rehabilitation, which will serve as the basis for a three-year land reclamation program.
The government has additionally tasked regional agencies with establishing a reliable system for monitoring and managing water resources, with the aim of turning Syrdarya into a model region in this area.
