Uzbekistan commits to cutting harmful emissions by 50 percent by 2035

Uzbekistan has pledged to halve its harmful gas emissions by 2035 as part of its updated commitments under the Paris Agreement, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev announced, recalling the country’s participation in the recent COP-30 climate conference in Brazil.

“At COP-30 in Brazil, we voluntarily took on an important obligation within the Paris Agreement framework. We have set ourselves the goal of reducing harmful gas emissions by 50 percent by 2035,” the president stated.

Mirziyoyev noted that Uzbekistan is already implementing the world’s first innovative ICRAFT project in partnership with the World Bank. Under the initiative, 23 million tonnes of reduced greenhouse gas emissions have been accounted for, and work has begun on establishing international carbon unit trading.

The president also highlighted progress in expanding green energy certification. This year alone, 17 major industrial enterprises in Uzbekistan have transitioned to an international “green” energy certification system. The plan is to increase this number to 100 enterprises within the next two years.

Turning to regional cooperation, Mirziyoyev underscored the strengthening of energy partnerships with neighboring countries. To enhance the joint use and management of Central Asia’s hydropower potential, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan aim to begin financing the Kambarata HPP-1 project next year.

The president also acknowledged the efforts of Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan in advancing the “green corridor” project, which will enable the export of electricity from Central Asia to Europe.

Officials stated that these initiatives will help Uzbekistan meet its international climate obligations, significantly boost the share of renewable energy, and reinforce the country’s role in the regional energy market.
