Uzbekistan’s state-owned energy company Uzbekneftegaz has decided to develop 21 hydrocarbon fields in the Gazli area independently, abandoning earlier plans to involve external partners in the projects.

In a statement, Uzbekneftegaz described the move as an “important strategic decision” aimed at increasing hydrocarbon production in the Gazli region. Under the revised approach, projects that were previously expected to be implemented with partners will now be carried out using the company’s own technical capacity and financial resources.
The company said the plan provides for the introduction of modern technologies, the deployment of additional drilling equipment, the installation of surface compressor stations, and the procurement of necessary material and technical resources to accelerate production processes at the fields.
The announcement comes shortly after a meeting between the management of Uzbekneftegaz and representatives of China’s United Energy Group Limited, held about two weeks ago. According to the company, the talks focused on the current status and implementation pace of a joint project aimed at boosting hydrocarbon output at fields located in the Gazli area.
During the discussions, the two sides reviewed strategic priorities to ensure the project’s effective and sustainable execution, as well as modern technological solutions and financial and economic issues. At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties emphasized the need to further accelerate implementation, achieve agreed performance targets on time, and clearly plan the next stages of work.
The decision to retain the Gazli projects under Uzbekneftegaz’s direct control also comes amid renewed pressure to raise gas production. In mid-December 2025, Abdugani Sanginov was appointed chairman of Uzbekneftegaz. At the time, Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Kuchkarov acknowledged that expected results had not been achieved despite the allocation of substantial funds to increase gas output.
About a month later, Sanginov was instructed at a meeting chaired by the president to intensify efforts to boost gas production, underscoring the strategic importance of tangible gains in the sector.
