Authorities foil plot to traffic student to Istanbul for prostitution
Uzbek law enforcement officers have disrupted an alleged human trafficking network after apprehending a group of suspects at Samarkand International Airport in the early hours of the morning. A young female student was reportedly rescued from being trafficked to Turkey for sexual exploitation in what officials are calling a last-minute intervention.
The pre-dawn raid, which took place at approximately 4:00 a.m. on March 2, was launched after officers received intelligence regarding the plot.
The alleged ringleader, identified as a Turkish national, is said to have recruited three Uzbek accomplices to carry out the operation. Their target was a first-year university student from Bukhara, who was allegedly being transported to Istanbul to be forced into prostitution.
All four suspects were arrested at the airport check-in desk as they attempted to board a flight alongside the victim. Officers seized their passports and airline tickets at the scene.
It remains unclear how the suspects lured the student into agreeing to travel abroad, and authorities have yet to release further details.
A criminal case has been opened under the Criminal Code on charges of human trafficking by a group acting in prior conspiracy for the purpose of sexual exploitation. Investigators state the inquiry is ongoing; if convicted, the four suspects face between five and ten years in prison.
