Tashkent unveils major redevelopment plan for Broadway pedestrian zone
Tashkent city authorities have unveiled plans for a major overhaul of the capital’s Broadway pedestrian zone. The project encompasses nearby public spaces, green areas, walkways, and urban infrastructure, according to a statement from the city administration.
The redevelopment is intended to improve pedestrian access, enhance safety, and modernize public spaces while preserving Broadway’s distinctive character and atmosphere. Officially known as Sayilgoh Street, Broadway is one of Tashkent’s most popular pedestrian areas and a long-time gathering place for artists, musicians, and visitors. City officials noted that the area’s heavy foot traffic and public importance necessitate modern and sustainable upgrades.
Authorities stated that a review of the area highlighted the need for phased renovation works extending beyond the pedestrian zone itself to include surrounding neighborhoods. The redevelopment will be carried out in line with the city’s Unified Design Code and broader urban planning guidelines. Officials added that proposals from residents and members of the professional community would be considered during the planning process.
The city administration confirmed that Broadway would remain an open public space and that the creative community, including street artists, would continue to play a central role in the area’s identity. The project is intended to improve comfort and safety while better organizing public activity rather than restricting it.
Planned works include upgrades to roads and pavements, improvements to pedestrian routes and lighting systems, the restoration of fountains, and the installation of new benches and other public amenities. The project also includes expanded landscaping and irrigation systems, stricter regulation of signage and advertising, the removal of illegal structures, and the installation of comprehensive video surveillance systems.
Specialists are currently inspecting existing trees in the area. Furthermore, authorities plan to plant at least 1,000 new trees and shrubs to expand the zone's decorative landscaping.
