Heavy rains trigger mudflow and flooding alerts in mountainous areas of Uzbekistan
The Center for Hydrometeorological Services (Uzhydromet) has issued a safety advisory warning of potential mudflows and flash floods across nine regions of the country. Torrential downpours forecast between June 9 and June 12 are expected to impact mountain and foothill zones, creating hazardous conditions and water logging in low-lying areas.
The weather service indicated that mudflow-flood phenomena could occur in a broad range of high-risk districts. In Kashkadarya region, the warning covers the Yakkabog, Dehkonobod, Chirakchi, Kitob, Shahrisabz, Kamashi, and Guzor districts. In Surkhandarya region, risks are elevated in Sariosiyo, Uzun, Oltinsoy, Denov, Boysun, Sherobod, Shorchi, Kumkorgon, and Muzrabot districts.
Similarly, emergency precautions are advised in Samarkand region, particularly within Urgut, Samarkand, Bulungur, Nurobod, Koshrabot, Kattakorgon, Payaryk, Jomboy, and Ishtikhon districts. Navoi region may see disruptions in Khatirchi, Navbahor, Nurota, Konimekh, and Karmana districts, while Jizzakh region faces threats in the Zomin, Bakhmal, Gallaorol, Sharof Rashidov, Forish, and Yangiobod districts.
Closer to the capital, Toshkent region is vulnerable in the Ohangaron, Bostonlyk, Parkent, Pskent, Ortachirchik, and Yukorichirchik districts, alongside the industrial cities of Angren and Olmalyk.
The Fergana Valley is also heavily included in the weather alert. In Namangan region, the districts of Pop, Kosonsoy, Chortok, Chust, Namangan, and Yangikorgon are at risk. Fergana region faces potential flows in Sokh, Shohimardon, Fergana, and Besharyk districts, while Andijan region sees risks across the Andijan, Asaka, Jalakuduk, Korgontepa, Pakhtaobod, Izboskan, Khojaobod, and Marhamat districts, as well as the city of Khonobod.
Beyond the threat of fast-moving mudflows from the highlands, meteorologists warned that intense rainfall could cause rapid stormwater accumulation, leading to the localized flooding of residential areas and agricultural lands.
Authorities have urgently called on residents living in these foothills and mountainous zones, as well as tourists, holidaymakers, and motorists traveling through highland passes, to exercise extreme caution and closely monitor local safety reports.
