Uzbekistan’s average population density reached 85.5 people per square kilometer as of April 1, 2026, according to data released by the National Statistics Committee.
A demographic breakdown by region reveals massive disparities between urban centers, the fertile Fergana Valley, and the expansive desert territories of the west.
Tashkent city stands out as the most densely populated area by a wide margin, squeezing an average of 7,352.4 people into every square kilometer. Outside the capital, the highest population concentrations are found in the Fergana Valley regions. Andijan region leads these provinces with 821.4 people per square kilometer, followed by Fergana region at 627.8 people and Namangan region at 430.9 people.
Central and western agricultural regions maintain a moderate density profile. Khorezm region accommodates 341.2 people per square kilometer, while Samarkand region has 262.1 people. Syrdarya region and Toshkent region follow closely, recording densities of 222.1 and 209.6 people per square kilometer, respectively.
Further south, the density drops to 150.5 people per square kilometer in Surkhandarya region and 130.6 people in Kashkadarya region. Jizzakh region sits just below the national average at 74.3 people, while Bukhara region records a scarcer 50.5 people per square kilometer.
The lowest population densities are found in the country’s vast, arid western territories. The Republic of Karakalpakstan handles just 12.4 people per square kilometer, while Navoi region registers as the most sparsely populated region in Uzbekistan, with a mere 10.2 people per square kilometer.
