Uzhydromet issues flash flood warnings for mountainous areas across Uzbekistan

Heavy rainfall forecast across Uzbekistan between June 23–27 is highly likely to trigger flash floods and mudslides in several mountainous and foothills districts, warned Sherzod Habibullayev, the director of the Center for Hydrometeorological Services (Uzhydromet).

The weather agency has identified multiple high-risk areas susceptible to severe torrents. In Kashkadarya region, risks are concentrated around Yakkabag, Dehkanabad, Chiroqchi, Kitab, Shakhrisabz, Qamashi, and Guzar districts. Neighboring Surkhandarya region faces similar vulnerabilities across Sariosiyo, Uzun, Altinsay, Denau, Boysun, Sherabad, Shurchi, Qumqorgon, and Muzrabat.

In Samarkand, the alert covers Urgut, Samarkand, Bulungur, Nurabad, Qoshrabot, Kattaqorgon, Payaryk, Jomboy, and Ishtikhon districts. Further north and east, risks extend to the Navoi region, including Khatirchi, Navbahor, Nurata, Kanimekh, and Karmana, as well as Jizzakh region’s Zamin, Bakhmal, Gallaorol, Sharof Rashidov, Forish, and Yangiobod districts.

Tashkent region is also on alert, specifically within Ohangaron, Bostanlyk, Parkent, Piskent, Orta Chirchiq, and Yuqori Chirchiq districts, along with the industrial hubs of Angren and Almalyk. In the Fergana Valley, the threat covers Namangan region's Pap, Kasansay, Chortoq, Chust, Namangan, and Yangiqorgon districts; Fergana region's Sokh, Shakhimardan, Fergana, and Besharyk districts; and Andijan region's Andijan, Asaka, Jalaquduq, Qorgontepa, Pakhtaabad, Izboskan, Khojaobod, and Marhamat districts, alongside the city of Khanabad.

Given the substantial risk, Uzhydromet has strongly advised residents in foothills and mountainous zones, holidaymakers, and drivers navigating highland roads to exercise maximum caution and take necessary safety measures. The agency added that intense downpours may cause heavy rainwater accumulation in urban or low-lying areas, posing an additional risk of localized flooding.

According to current projections, short-term thunderstorms and brief showers will hit the northwestern regions on June 23, before shifting to Tashkent, Samarkand, Jizzakh, Syrdarya, and the Fergana Valley on June 24. Conditions are expected to clear up nationwide by June 25–26 with no precipitation forecast. Most parts of the country will experience daytime highs between 33°C–38°C during the workweek, though temperatures in parts of the south and the desert zones will spike to 41°C–44°C on June 23, before a cool front lowers temperatures by 4°C–6°C.
