The Green Climate Fund (GCF) Board has approved the €264.4 million programme, titled Climate-Resilient Landscapes in Central Asia (CLiCA), which covers Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, the National Committee on Ecology and Climate Change of Uzbekistan said.

The programme was developed by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) in partnership with the three countries. Uzbekistan's participation was coordinated by the National Center for Climate Change under the ecology committee.

Of the total funding, €103.7 million is allocated to Uzbekistan. The money will support forest and pasture restoration, the introduction of climate-resilient agricultural practices and improved access to financial instruments that can help farmers adapt to the effects of climate change.

The programme is expected to deliver the following results in Uzbekistan:

  • Improve resilience to climate risks for 342,000 people, around half of them women.

  • Introduce climate-resilient management practices across 164,000 hectares of forests, pastures and agricultural land.

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase carbon sequestration by a combined 1.07 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.

GIZ described the approval as an important step towards building more resilient communities and landscapes across Central Asia.

"Together with our partners in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, we intend to turn our shared goal into long-term results for the people and nature of Central Asia," the organization said.
