IAEA expresses readiness to support Uzbekistan in the construction of the NPP

On January 31, the meeting of the President of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan Behzod Yuldashev with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano, took place in Vienna.
According to the press service of the Foreign Ministry, during the conversation, the head of the IAEA was informed in detail about the work being done in Uzbekistan to develop atomic science, including medicine, and to ensure nuclear safety.
At the meeting, it was stressed that given the plans to build the first nuclear power plant in Central Asia, Uzbekistan will continue to firmly adhere to its international obligations to comply with all the requirements and recommendations of the IAEA to ensure nuclear safety. The creation of a separate Agency for the Development of Nuclear Energy of Uzbekistan (Uzatom), which established cooperation with the IAEA and nuclear power operators in Russia, the USA, the CIS countries, Asia and Europe, was particularly noted.
“The Director General of the IAEA expressed his satisfaction with the effectiveness of joint activities to ensure and enhance radiation and nuclear safety, as well as the implementation of projects in the framework of technical cooperation. The construction of a nuclear power plant in the republic will lay a solid foundation for the improvement of the education system, the development of nuclear engineering, the construction industry and energy. At the same time, it is important to explain the benefits of nuclear energy to people,” the Foreign Ministry said.
It is noted that Yukiya Amano confirmed the readiness of the IAEA to continue providing technical and expert assistance to Uzbekistan, including in the process of building a nuclear power plant.
According to the Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan to the IAEA, following the meeting, the Director General of the Agency was handed a letter inviting him to make an official visit to Uzbekistan at a convenient time for him.
