Akbar Djuraev wins second gold for Uzbekistan in Tokyo Olympics
Akbar Djuraev has won the men’s 109kg weightlifting gold with an Olympic Record of 430kg.
Djuraev’s snatch lift was 193kg, with the clean and jerk an Olympic record of 237kg.
Armenia’s Simon Martirosyan bagged the silver (423kg) with Latvia’s Arturs Plesnieks finally earning a medal, with third place on the podium (410kg).
Martirosyan, meanwhile, achieved an Olympic Record in the snatch with 195kg, but he couldn't quite get the clean and jerk right to take gold (228kg).
The Latvian Plesnieks, who came in fifth at London 2012 and eighth at Rio 2016 needed the lift of his life to make the podium and duly delivered it with a massive 230kg, resulting in a rare show of emotion with a small fist pump on securing the bronze.
Akbar Djuraev’s victory brought Uzbekistan the second gold medal. The team of Uzbekistan currently has 2 gold and 1 bronze medal.
