Kyrgyz Parliament ratifies agreements on the border with Uzbekistan

The Kyrgyz Parliament ratified the border delimitation agreement with Uzbekistan and the Andijan reservoir agreement.

The Kyrgyz Jogorku Kenesh (Supreme Council) adopted in three readings the draft law on the ratification of the agreement on the delimitation of certain sections of the Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan border and the agreement on the cooperative management of water resources of the Andijan (Kampirabad) reservoir with Uzbekistan.

Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov took part in the meeting. Kamchybek Tashiyev, head of the National Security State Committee, read out the draft laws.

Earlier, Tashiyev said that according to the results of the agreement, more than 19,000 hectares of land will remain under the Andijan reservoir for Kyrgyzstan and 4,485 hectares for Uzbekistan. According to the draft agreement, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan will establish a joint enterprise for the management of the water reservoir. 12 people from each side will participate in it.

Kyrgyzstan receives the following land plots:

•  the area of Gavasay – 12,872 hectares (ha);
•  Kokserek village – 105 ha;
•  Ala-Buka district, Bayaston village – 212 ha;
•  Ungartog (Ungartepa) mountain – 35 ha;
•  Ala-Buka district, Kara-Beles village – 25 ha;
•  Karasuv district, Aktash village – 100 ha;
•  part of the Shahrikhansoy canal – 19.5 ha;
•  Suzak district – 500 ha;
•  Uzgan district – 500 ha.

Earlier, Sadyr Japarov said that it was planned to “put an end to border problems forever” with Uzbekistan: “I think that the people who have seen everything with their own eyes will applaud us”.

On November 14, these documents were ratified by the Legislative Chamber of the Parliament of Uzbekistan.

Discussion of the draft laws caused protests in Kyrgyzstan, 26 people were arrested on suspicion of preparing mass riots. Among them are former deputy Orozayim Narmatova and activist Ilgiz Shamenov, who was arrested in Moscow. Human rights defenders demand the authorities to release the detainees.
