Uzbekistan to supply Kazakhstan with additional 500 million cubic meters of water by end of irrigation season
Uzbekistan has already fulfilled its obligation by supplying over 4 billion cubic meters of water to Kazakhstan via the Syr Darya within four months.
Kazakhstan's Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation announced that Uzbekistan will provide Kazakhstan with an additional 500 million cubic meters of water until the end of the irrigation season, Kazinform reported.
It was noted that since April 1, Uzbekistan has supplied over 4 billion cubic meters of water to Kazakhstan via the Syr Darya. Previously, the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, had reached an agreement with Uzbekistan to supply 3.7 billion cubic meters of water to Kazakhstan via the Syr Darya within six months. Uzbekistan managed to fulfill this obligation within four months.
"All these efforts are aimed at fully meeting the irrigation water needs of farmers in Kazakhstan's southern regions. Currently, the Chardara Reservoir holds 1.5 billion cubic meters of water, which is nearly 500 million cubic meters more than last year. A total of 4 billion cubic meters of water has flowed into the Chardara Reservoir," the report stated.
From the Chardara Reservoir, 4.5 billion cubic meters of water was released into the lower reaches of the Syr Darya, which is 1 billion cubic meters more than last year. The Kyzylkum Canal received 850 million cubic meters of water, and 590 million cubic meters were delivered to the North Aral Sea.
"Thanks to the preliminary agreements with our neighbors regarding the operational regime of the Toktogul and Bahri-Tajik reservoirs, water is now regularly flowing into the Kazakhstan section of the ‘Dostyk’ interstate canal. Currently, 90 cubic meters of water per second are flowing into the country via this canal, which is sufficient to fully meet the irrigation needs of farmers in the Turkestan region," said Möldir Abdualiyeva, an official representative of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.
