Following the formal ceremony, a brief discussion took place. The Secretary-General warmly recalled his meeting with Uzbekistan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs in February 2025 in Jakarta. He noted that the discussions had laid the groundwork for an effective political dialogue and multifaceted cooperation between ASEAN and Uzbekistan.

Kao Kim Hourn emphasized that he is closely following the reforms taking place in Uzbekistan. He stated that the ASEAN Secretariat highly values Uzbekistan’s commitment to establishing an advanced model of cooperation and its firm determination to strengthen partnerships across a wide range of areas.

It is worth noting that Ambassador Oybek Eshonov previously presented his credentials to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on November 4, 2024. The 57-year-old diplomat graduated from the Eastern Studies Faculty of Tashkent State University (now the National University of Uzbekistan) and the Academy of State Governance under the President of Uzbekistan. From 2008 to 2017, he served as Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Israel. Before his recent appointment, he headed the Department for Cooperation with South Asian, Middle Eastern, and African Countries at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is fluent in Persian and English.

Oybek Eshonov succeeds Ulugbek Rozikulov, who served as Uzbekistan’s Ambassador in Jakarta from 2018 to 2022 and was later appointed Board Chairman of Uzavtosanoat JSC.
