According to the committee, no such incidents have been recorded in the country, and the circulating information is false.
In response, committee specialists urged citizens to purchase melons and watermelons only from authorized markets and trade centers, where the produce is subject to laboratory inspections and quality control.
Gastrointestinal issues possible, but not fatal
While the reports of fatalities are untrue, the committee did acknowledge that gastrointestinal issues can occur after consuming melons or watermelons. Several contributing factors were outlined:
- Individual physiological sensitivity
- Mixing incompatible foods
- Consumption of spoiled produce (especially if pre-cut and stored for too long)
- Excessive levels of nitrates and nitrites, among other factors
Avoid buying from roadside vendors
The committee strongly advised against buying melons and watermelons from roadside vendors or unregulated sellers in residential yards, as such produce typically does not undergo any safety inspections.
Consumers are encouraged to buy from officially permitted sales points to minimize health risks and ensure food safety.
