Uzbekistan introduces car-free zones in all regions to boost tourism
The State Committee for Tourism has launched an initiative to create special car-free zones across all regions and cities of Uzbekistan, designed to be pedestrian-friendly for both tourists and local residents. These zones provide opportunities for walking, relaxation, and cultural activities without the interference of vehicular traffic.
According to the Tourism Committee, a number of routes across the country have been designated as car-free areas to ensure comfortable pedestrian access, enhance recreational opportunities, and allow for meaningful leisure activities in each region.
Key locations include:
- Bukhara region – from the Toqi Telpakfurushon cultural heritage site to the Ark fortress parking area in the historical city center;
- Andijan region – selected areas in Khonobod city;
- Fergana region – around the I. Karimov Palace of Arts, the Eco City cultural park, Ahmad al-Farghani recreational park in Fergana city, E. Vohidov recreation park in Margilan, and in Kokand city, the Urda square and Istiklol Tourism Street.
In Samarkand region, a new tourist facility in the Konigil tourism village has established a 2.5 km car-free road. Entry points are marked with traffic signs prohibiting vehicles. Additionally, I. Karimov Street connecting Registan Square and the Shah-i-Zinda complex, spanning 1.5 km, has also been designated as a car-free zone.
Other car-free zones have been established in multiple locations, including:
- Republic of Karakalpakstan – Dostlik Canal Street in Nukus city’s Dostlik recreation center;
- Andijan region – Istiklol, Orikzor, and Sariqoy streets in Andijan city;
- Jizzakh region – Sindor Hamroqulov Street in Zargarlik neighborhood, Hamid Olimjon and Zulfiya Museum area, and Urda ecological park;
- Namangan region – U. Nosir and Lutfiy streets in Obi Hayot neighborhood;
- Kashkadarya region – historical square in Shahrisabz city, Miraki tourist center in Shahrisabz district, and Istiklol Street surrounding Independence Square in Qarshi city;
- Syrdarya region – 0.72 km section of Alisher Navoi Street in Guliston city;
- Tashkent city – Taras Shevchenko Street in Mirabad district;
- Tashkent region – part of Toshkent Yuli Street in Qorasuv neighborhood, 1 km in Oybek neighborhood, Bunyodkor Street in Angren city, and 0.9 km of S. Rahmatov Street in Dostlik neighborhood;
- Navoi region – Yangi Uzbekistan Park, “Spirituality and Enlightenment” Park, Sarmishsoy Museum-Reserve, and the area around Yoshlik Lake;
- Surkhandarya region – internal section of Alisher Navoi Street in Alpomish neighborhood, Termez city;
- Khorezm region – 24.5-hectare Arda Khiva tourism complex in Khiva city, fully operating as a car-free zone.
According to the Tourism Committee, these initiatives aim to develop domestic and international tourism, promote pedestrian travel, and ensure safe and convenient pedestrian movement in historical and cultural areas.
