IBA dismisses appeal, keeps Shumkov’s controversial win over Khalokov
The International Boxing Association (IBA) has confirmed the outcome of the men’s 60 kg final at the Boxing World Championships between Abdumalik Khalokov of Uzbekistan and Vsevolod Shumkov of Russia, which took place in Dubai.
According to the IBA, the result of the bout will remain unchanged following a comprehensive review of a controversial incident that occurred late in the third round. Experts concluded that the episode was accidental in nature and did not affect the course or outcome of the fight. The referee, who was positioned close to the incident, did not register any violation, and video review confirmed that the bout continued correctly.
The situation had previously sparked widespread public debate. As reported earlier, the Uzbek side pointed to what it described as unacceptable conduct by the opponent during a clinch with 55 seconds remaining in the fight. In response, the IBA launched an investigation involving its disciplinary and medical commissions.
Commenting on the decision, IBA President Umar Kremlev said there were no doubts regarding the sporting result.
“The Disciplinary and Ethics Committee conducted a thorough and comprehensive review of the situation. There can be no objections or doubts regarding the outcome of the bout. Shumkov won this fight fairly,” Kremlev said.
At the same time, the IBA president stressed that the organization does not condone the controversial incident that occurred during the fight.
“The incident involving an ear bite by Shumkov is not justified by anyone, including myself as IBA president. It was an improper action, and such situations are unacceptable,” he said.
Kremlev explained that since the incident did not influence the result of the bout and no official protests or complaints were filed during the fight by the boxer or his team, experts decided to uphold the result. However, Vsevolod Shumkov was fined 50 percent of his purse.
In addition, the IBA president proposed holding a rematch between the two boxers.
“I propose organizing a rematch between these two fighters. The IBA championship belt will be on the line. The bout will be held over eight rounds. The ring will show who is stronger. We are awaiting a response from the boxers’ teams,” Kremlev added.
The IBA also said that the disputed incident will be further reviewed by the Boxing Independent Integrity Unit (BIIU), which may impose disciplinary measures if necessary, without affecting the official result of the final bout.
