Talgo secures record Afrosiyob train maintenance deal in Uzbekistan
Spanish rail equipment manufacturer Talgo has announced the signing of a contract worth about €80 million with the state-owned company Uzbekistan Railways.
The agreement provides for the technical maintenance of six Talgo 250 high-speed trains, known in Uzbekistan under the Afrosiyob brand, which operate on routes linking Tashkent, Samarkand, Karshi, and Bukhara. The contract has been signed for a period of 10 years.
According to Talgo, the new agreement is the largest maintenance contract the company has concluded in Uzbekistan over the entire period of its presence in the country’s market. Prior to this, Talgo had cooperated with Uzbekistan Railways and signed service contracts over a span of 15 years.
Talgo high-speed trains have been in use in Uzbekistan since 2011. The contract for the delivery of the first two trainsets, each consisting of nine cars, was signed back in 2009, and these trains formed the backbone of the launch of high-speed rail services in the country.
Subsequently, Uzbekistan Railways agreed to purchase four additional Talgo 250 trains – two trainsets arrived in 2017 and another two in 2021. In addition, to increase capacity on the initial trains, the state company purchased extra railcars, expanding each of the first trainsets to 11 cars and later standardizing all operating trains to an 11-car configuration.
