Uzbekistan buys nearly all of Tajikistan’s coal exports in 2025

According to Tajikistan’s Minister of Industry and New Technologies Sherali Kabir, the country produced more than 2.8 million tons of coal in 2025. Speaking at a press conference in Dushanbe, he said output increased by 235,000 tons, or 10%, compared to 2024.

Coal exports rose sharply over the year. Tajikistan shipped 558,700 tons of coal abroad in 2025, marking a 42% increase year-on-year.

Uzbekistan accounted for 99.91% of total exports, purchasing 558,200 tons. Afghanistan imported just 474 tons over the same period.

Within Tajikistan, 2.27 million tons of coal were sold domestically. Of that volume, 800,000 tons were supplied to the Dushanbe-2 thermal power plant. Nearly 451,000 tons were sold to households.

Authorities said plans are underway to construct new coal enterprises in the coming years. Tajikistan is working with companies from Russia, China, European Union countries and Uzbekistan to attract investment into the coal industry and expand production capacity.
