Islamic Civilization Center in Tashkent to open ahead of Ramadan Eid
President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has announced that the Islamic Civilization Center in Tashkent will be officially opened on the eve of Ramadan Eid, with the complex set to welcome the public on March 19–21.
According to journalist Aziza Qurbonova, the president said the center would be fully accessible to visitors during those dates.
“Every young person, every citizen of Uzbekistan who visits will gain a deeper understanding of our great ancestors’ heritage and our national identity, and will return with a sense of pride. Young people in particular should come here,” the president said.
From concept to landmark project
The idea to establish the center was first put forward on April 21, 2017, during the president’s visit to the Hazrati Imam Complex, also known as Hastimom. At that time, he proposed creating an Islamic culture center in the area.
On September 1 of the same year, the establishment of the institution was formally announced. It was decided that the complex would include an academy, a library, archives, and research centers. The name “Islamic Civilization Center” was subsequently approved.
A foundation stone was laid on June 15, 2018. In December that year, the president visited the construction site, reviewed progress, and inspected the rising structural framework of the building.
Infrastructure upgrades around the complex
In May 2024, the Tashkent city administration and media outlets announced temporary traffic restrictions on several streets in the capital, including sections of Qorasaroy Street, due to reconstruction works linked to the project.
The upgrades included the modernization of lighting systems, facade repairs, improvements to drainage and irrigation networks, and landscaping of access roads.
On April 8, 2025, authorities announced that the section of Qorasaroy Street in front of the Hazrati Imam Complex and the Islamic Civilization Center would be fully transformed into a pedestrian promenade. Vehicle traffic will be redirected through a 1.2 km underground tunnel, with 800 meters of the tunnel scheduled for completion by September.
