Tashkent targets traffic woes with new unified digital parking pilot
The Tashkent city administration is integrating parking into a unified urban management system as part of a broader strategy to ease congestion and improve road safety.
The Center for Traffic Management has launched the pilot project to address critical bottlenecks. In the city's most active areas, data shows that up to 20–30% of vehicles are parked in violation of regulations, while 30-40% of traffic flow is generated solely by drivers searching for available spots. Furthermore, vehicles partially occupying sidewalks can reduce pedestrian capacity by as much as 40-60%.
The effectiveness of this trial will be assessed following public consultations before any potential city-wide scaling. Beyond traffic management, the project is expected to generate revenue that will be reinvested directly into the districts where the system is implemented, specifically for road infrastructure development.
Tashkent is looking to international success stories for validation. Global data suggests that unified digital systems can reduce parking search times by up to 43% and overall vehicle mileage by 30%, as seen in San Francisco’s "SFpark" program. Similarly, a centralized approach in Moscow reduced parking violations by 64% and increased average traffic speeds within paid zones to 56 km/h.
