Traffic safety: 49 drivers face license suspension after reaching penalty point limit
The number of motorists reaching the 12-point penalty threshold in Uzbekistan has risen sharply, hitting 49 just one week after the first such offender was identified.
According to data provided to Kun.uz by Zoyir Yoldoshev, head of the Road Safety Service press office, the vast majority of these violations are concentrated in Tashkent.
As of May 8, Tashkent leads the country with 29 drivers exceeding the 12-point limit. Fergana follows with eight cases, while Bukhara has recorded three. Other regions reporting offenders include Tashkent and Andijan provinces with two each, and the Republic of Karakalpakstan, Samarkand, Namangan, Surkhandarya, and Khorezm with one case each. Currently, only Navoi, Kashkadarya, Jizzakh, and Sirdaryo regions have no drivers who have reached the maximum point limit.
Under Article 34-1 of the Code of Administrative Responsibility, motorists who accumulate 12 points within a single year face a mandatory license suspension for a minimum of six months. All 49 current cases have already been forwarded to the courts for final review.
Regaining driving privileges will now be significantly more difficult than in the past. Zoyir Yoldoshev explained that offenders cannot simply retake an exam; they must now return to driving school for both theoretical and practical training.
"The requirements for the theoretical exam have also been tightened. Instead of answering 18 out of 20 questions correctly as previously required, these drivers must now provide at least 46 correct answers out of 50," Yoldoshev noted, adding that those who follow the rules consistently face neither fines nor penalty points.
