Torrential rains trigger widespread mudslide alerts across nine regions of Uzbekistan
The Center for Hydrometeorological Services (Uzhydromet) has issued a weather warning for the foothills and mountainous areas of Uzbekistan, stating that heavy rainfall expected between June 2–5 could trigger mudslides and flash floods. Authorities are calling on local residents, vacationers, and motorists to exercise heightened caution over the coming days.
According to meteorologists, the impending precipitation creates a substantial risk of mudslide formation across mountainous zones in nine regions, including Kashkadarya, Surkhandarya, Samarkand, Navoi, Jizzakh, Tashkent, Namangan, Fergana, and Andijan.
In the southern part of the country, high–risk zones cover Yakkabog, Dehqonobod, Chiroqchi, Kitob, Shahrisabz, Qamashi, and Guzor districts of Kashkadarya region. In Surkhandarya region, mudslides could affect the Sariosiyo, Uzun, Oltinsoy, Denov, Boysun, Sherobod, Shorchi, Qumqorgon, and Muzrabot districts.
Further north and west, vulnerabilities have been identified across Samarkand region, specifically in Urgut, Samarkand, Bulungur, Nurobod, Qoshrabot, Kattaqorgon, Payariq, Jomboy, and Ishtikhon districts. In Navoi region, the alert covers Khatirchi, Navbahor, Nurota, Konimekh, and Karmana districts.
The threat extends significantly into the central and eastern parts of the republic. Flash floods remain a distinct possibility in Jizzakh region's Zomin, Bakhmal, Gallaorol, Sharof Rashidov, Forish, and Yangiobod districts. In Tashkent region, the warning encompasses the Ohangaron, Bostonlyk, Parkent, Piskent, Orta Chirchiq, and Yuqori Chirchiq districts, alongside the cities of Angren and Olmaliq.
The Fergana Valley is also facing an elevated risk. Mudslide warnings are active for Namangan region's Pop, Kosonsoy, Chortoq, Chust, Namangan, and Yangiqorgon districts. In Fergana region, the dangerous zones cover the Sokh, Shohimardon, Fergana, and Beshariq districts. Finally, Andijan region's Andijan, Asaka, Jalaquduq, Qorgontepa, Pakhtaobod, Izboskan, Khojaobod, and Marhamat districts, as well as the city of Khonobod, are on high alert.
Uzhydromet strongly advises citizens living in these mountainous areas, alongside tourists and holidaymakers, to stay away from riverbeds, streams, and low-lying pathways prone to sudden water accumulation. Drivers traveling along mountain passes are urged to monitor changing weather conditions closely and adjust their speed to ensure safety.
Officials added that the heavy downpours may cause problems beyond the highlands. Low-lying urban areas, streets, and certain settlements face temporary flooding if stormwater volumes exceed local drainage capacities.
