Uzhydromet issues flood and mudslide alerts for mountainous regions
The Center for Hydrometeorological Services (Uzhydromet) has issued an emergency warning across Uzbekistan, forecasting potential flash floods and mudslides in several foothill and mountainous regions from June 6 to June 8. The hazardous conditions are being driven by anticipated heavy rainfall over the three-day period.
According to Uzhydromet, the highest risk of mudflow and flood events spans nine distinct regions:
-
Kashkadarya region: Yakkabag, Dehkanabad, Chirakchi, Kitab, Shakhrisabz, Kamashi, and Guzar districts.
-
Surkhandarya region: Sariosiyo, Uzun, Altynsay, Denau, Boysun, Sherabad, Shurchi, Kumkurgan, and Muzrabat districts.
-
Samarkand region: Urgut, Samarkand, Bulungur, Nurabad, Koshrabot, Kattakurgan, Payariq, Jambay, and Ishtikhan districts.
-
Navoi region: Khatirchi, Navbahor, Nurata, Konimekh, and Karmana districts.
-
Jizzakh region: Zaamin, Bakhmal, Gallaorol, Sharof Rashidov, Forish, and Yangiabad districts.
-
Tashkent region: Akhangaran, Bostanlyk, Parkent, Pskent, Urtachirchik, and Yukorichirchik districts, alongside the cities of Angren and Almalyk.
-
Namangan region: Pap, Kasansay, Chartak, Chust, Namangan, and Yangikurgan districts.
-
Fergana region: Sokh, Shakhimardan, Fergana, and Besharyk districts.
-
Andijan region: Andijan, Asaka, Jalaquduq, Kurgantepa, Pakhtaabad, Izbaskan, Khojaabad, and Marhamat districts, as well as the city of Khanabad.
In light of the shifting weather patterns, emergency officials and meteorologists have strongly urged local residents, vacationers, and drivers operating in high-altitude zones to take extensive safety precautions. Alongside the danger of sudden mountain torrents, Uzhydromet noted that heavy downpours may lead to significant rainwater accumulation, creating a secondary risk of localized flooding in lower-lying urban and rural fields.
