Retail lending jumps nearly 25% to exceed UZS 230 trillion

Uzbekistan's retail loan portfolio expanded by nearly 25 percent over the past year, pushing total individual debt past UZS 230 trillion. Data from the Central Bank shows that the capital city continues to dominate the national credit landscape, with Tashkent residents and businesses accounting for more than 46 percent of the country's entire loan volume.

As of 1 May 2026, the aggregate outstanding debt owed to commercial banks by citizens and business entities reached UZS 628.9 trillion. This reflects an annual growth of UZS 63.4 trillion, representing an 11.2 percent increase compared to the same period in 2025.

A closer look at the data reveals that corporate loans issued to businesses comprise the majority of the debt, standing at UZS 398.2 trillion. Meanwhile, consumer loans and retail lending to individuals climbed to UZS 230.8 trillion. The retail segment experienced a particularly sharp increase, adding more than UZS 40 trillion to its volume over the 12–month period.

State-owned financial institutions remain the primary lenders in the country, managing UZS 417.2 trillion of the total credit volume. Private banks account for the remaining UZS 211.7 trillion.

Tashkent leads by a wide margin

Geographically, Tashkent remains the absolute leader in credit absorption. Total outstanding debt in the capital exceeded UZS 290 trillion, capturing over 46 percent of the national share. Within Tashkent, businesses hold UZS 221.2 trillion of the debt, while retail loans to individuals account for UZS 68.7 trillion.

Mortgages and microloans dominate retail borrowing

Mortgages continue to be the largest single driver of individual borrowing across the republic, making up UZS 83.8 trillion of the total retail portfolio.

Other key segments of personal debt include microloans at UZS 50 trillion, microcredits at UZS 44.3 trillion, and auto loans at UZS 39.6 trillion. On the smaller end of the spectrum, educational credit volumes reached UZS 6.9 trillion, while traditional consumer loans amounted to UZS 515 billion.
