The relevant regulatory document, adopted on the initiative of the Ministry of Justice, took effect on August 9. Under the new rules, customers buying up to $500 in cash foreign currency from banks are no longer required to present a passport, ID card or another document serving as proof of identity.

The requirement to provide an identity document remains in place for cash foreign currency purchases exceeding the equivalent of $500.

Previously, individuals could purchase up to $100 in cash foreign currency from banks without presenting an identity document.

Strong supply of foreign currency from households

According to the Central Bank, Uzbekistan’s population sold $21.7 billion worth of foreign currency to banks in 2025, while purchases amounted to $12 billion.

The resulting positive balance of $9.7 billion in individuals’ foreign currency transactions created additional supply in the domestic foreign exchange market.

International money transfers were the main source of foreign currency sold by households, according to the Central Bank.
