There were 8,557 general secondary education institutions in the 1991/1992 academic year. The number rose steadily during the following decade, reaching 9,289 in 1995/1996 and 9,726 in 2000/2001.

The figure stood at 9,803 in 2005/2006 and remained almost unchanged at 9,806 in 2010/2011. It then declined slightly to 9,720 in 2015/2016.

The number of schools began rising again in the following years, reaching 10,181 in 2020/2021, 10,289 in 2021/2022 and 10,522 in 2022/2023.

The upward trend continued in the past three academic years, with the number of general secondary education institutions increasing to 10,750 in 2023/2024, 10,943 in 2024/2025 and 11,118 in 2025/2026.

Overall, the number of schools has grown by 2,561 compared with the 1991/1992 academic year.
