ID cards to be introduced in 2021

According to the Director of the State Personalization Center (SPC) under the Cabinet of Ministers Najmiddin Turakhodjayev, ID cards, that were to replace the Uzbekistan passports for internal use, will be introduced in 2021, not in 2019.

In compliance with the presidential decree of April 18, 2018, it was intended to introduce the ID-card system in Tashkent city in pilot project as of November 1, 2018, but the timeline was changed.

Najmiddin Turakhodjayev, with reference to the presidential decree of December 26, said that ID-cards would be gradually introduced starting from 2021, and possibly earlier. Prior to this, the necessary infrastructure must be put in place.

The State Center for Personalization is technically ready to introduce IDs “straight away”, said Turakhodjayev. “But in order for citizens not to encounter difficulties, the IDs must be functional beyond the police matters. We are now developing a whole chain of technological processes, we will prepare government agencies that use these accounts, and as far as possible we will introduce them.”

It should be reminded that ID-cards are intended to gradually replace the current national passports for internal use and will become the main tool for obtaining public services and using the E-Government system.
