Uzbekistan’s electric vehicle imports surge, driven by Chinese manufacturers

As of July 1, 2025, more than 73,000 electric vehicles (EVs) have been registered in Uzbekistan, according to the National Statistics Committee.

The number reached 73,600, marking a 12.88% increase – or an additional 8,400 vehicles – since April.

However, the distribution across regions is highly uneven, with Tashkent alone accounting for the vast majority of EVs. Less than one in four electric cars is registered outside the capital. While Tashkent’s share slightly declined from 76.2% to 75.8% between April and June, it still holds a dominant lead.

By the end of the first half of the year, the capital had 55,820 registered EVs, reflecting a 12.25% increase in the second quarter.

Tashkent region ranks second but trails far behind, with just 5,262 EVs – more than ten times fewer than the capital. Still, it posted a 16.62% increase during April–June. The rest of the top five regions include Samarkand (2,075 units, +19.32%), Khorezm (1,659, +17.24%), and Kashkadarya (1,519, +13.53%).

In the first half of the year, Uzbekistan imported 14,350 electric vehicles – more than half of the country’s total vehicle imports during that period. In June alone, 4,567 EVs were brought in, accounting for 76% of all vehicle imports that month. China remains the leading supplier of vehicles to the Uzbek market.

According to recent data from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the number of EV charging stations in Uzbekistan has grown 2.5 times year-on-year – reaching 1,399 nationwide. In Tashkent, the number nearly tripled to 820. Together, the capital and Tashkent region account for nearly 70% of all charging stations, with the number of users rising to 92,000.
