Uzbekistan to launch large nuclear power plant by 2033
The first power unit of a large nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan is scheduled to be launched in 2033, followed by the second in 2035, according to the director of the Agency for Nuclear Energy under the Cabinet of Ministers (Uzatom), Azim Akhmedkhadjaev. He made the statement on 25 September at the World Nuclear Week international forum in Moscow.

Meanwhile, the commissioning of the first unit of a small nuclear power plant is planned for 2029, with the second to be launched six months later. Akhmedkhadjaev noted that production of reactor equipment has already started and that all work is proceeding according to schedule.
Responding to a question from a Spot correspondent about the timeline for the large nuclear plant, Akhmedkhadjaev clarified that the first unit is planned for 2033 and the second for 2035.
“For now, this is the plan, but in any case, the implementation schedule will ultimately be determined by discussions within the framework of the contract, which has not yet been signed. More precise dates will be announced later,” the Uzatom head explained.
On 20 June, Russia’s Rosatom State Corporation and Uzatom signed an agreement on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2025 to explore the possibility of building a large-capacity nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan.
Last week, Uzatom and Rosatom reached an agreement on a new configuration of the project, which will include two large-capacity units and two small-capacity units.
The additional agreement provides for the construction of two large-capacity VVER-1000 Generation III+ units and two small-capacity units equipped with RITM-200N reactors, each with a capacity of 55 MW.
According to Deputy Prime Minister Jamshid Khodjaev, by 2035 the combined nuclear power plant, covering an area of 525 hectares, will generate more than 15 billion kWh of electricity.
