The statement was made on Friday during a meeting dedicated to the development of Surkhandarya region, where the president described the condition of road and transport infrastructure as one of the region’s most pressing challenges.

According to Mirziyoyev, the existing passenger train journey from Tashkent to Termez currently takes more than 14 hours, underlining the need for faster and more efficient connections.

He noted that relevant agreements have been reached with South Korean partners to supply modern high-speed trains as part of efforts to modernize the domestic transport system and improve passenger convenience.

The president also instructed authorities to begin work this year on adapting the Toshguzar – Boysun – Kumkurgan railway sections for high-speed traffic. In addition, a project to electrify the 103 km Kumkurgan – Kudukli railway line is set to commence.

These measures are aimed at improving rail connectivity in the southern part of the country and reducing travel time for both passengers and freight transport.

Highway project with Asian Development Bank

Two years ago, a project was launched jointly with the Asian Development Bank to reconstruct the 111 km highway connecting Boysun and Denau with cement concrete pavement. The project is valued at $183m.

Once completed, freight traffic along the route is expected to double, while travel time will be reduced from three hours to 1.5 hours.

Major highway linking Afghanistan and Tajikistan

The president further noted that a 178 km international highway connecting Uzbekistan with Afghanistan and Tajikistan has not undergone major repairs for 30 years and is now in urgent need of reconstruction.

Responsible officials have been instructed to begin construction work within three months.
