German agency GIZ to provide €9 million grant to support green regional growth in Uzbekistan
The German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) will allocate a grant of €9 million for regional development projects in Uzbekistan. The initiative, announced by the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan following the meeting with GIZ representatives, aims to support sustainable "green" growth and comprehensive infrastructure improvements across several districts.
On April 30, First Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance Ilhom Norkulov hosted GIZ Country Director for Uzbekistan Joachim Fritz. The discussions, which included representatives from the state-owned company Uzagrostar, focused on the successful implementation of master plans and strategic development frameworks. Previous grants from the German government have already facilitated the creation of master plans and integrated development strategies for 12 districts, resulting in 24 pilot projects that were highly praised by both parties.
Earlier initiatives supported by a €1.3 million grant from GIZ included the establishment of a 500–hectare agritourism complex in the Shakhrisabz district and the organization of vocational training centers in the Amudarya, Chimbay, Bulungur, Kattaqurgan, Mirishkor, Khiva, and Khazarasp districts. Other successful projects involved the launch of intensive fish farming, the opening of craft and IT centers, and the installation of energy-efficient heat pumps in social facilities.
The new agreement for 2026-2029 will see €9 million directed toward further green pilot projects based on existing master plans. Notably, the partnership intends to integrate artificial intelligence and innovative analytical methods into the preparation and execution of regional strategies.
Furthermore, the parties plan to introduce pilot initiatives in three additional districts – Sokh, Bakhmal, and Boysun. A key component of the future cooperation will also involve conducting seminars and practical workshops designed to enhance the skills of project offices and the private sector in successfully implementing these regional strategies.
