How to get a Japan visa for citizens of Uzbekistan

Japan visas for Uzbekistan citizens are issued free of charge — no consular fee is required. Applications are accepted at the Embassy of Japan in Tashkent by prior online appointment. This guide explains what documents are required for a tourist visa, how to fill out the application form, and what may lead to refusal.

What types of visas does Japan issue

Japan issues both short-term and long-term visas: for tourism, visiting relatives, business trips, study, and work.

For travel from Uzbekistan, the most common option is a short-term tourist visa. It is suitable for sightseeing, visiting friends and relatives, and short private trips.

A tourist visa can be single-entry or multiple-entry.

  • A single-entry visa allows you to enter Japan once. It is usually issued for a first trip.
  • A multiple-entry visa allows you to enter Japan several times during the validity period. Such visas are more often granted to applicants with a good travel history, stable income, or previous trips to Japan.

The final decision on the visa type, validity period, and permitted length of stay is made by the consulate after reviewing the documents.

Can you get a Japan visa online

There is no electronic visa for citizens of Uzbekistan. You cannot apply online — applications are accepted only in paper form through the Embassy of Japan in Tashkent. However, the appointment for submission must be booked through the embassy’s online system.

Who can apply at the Embassy of Japan in Tashkent

The following applicants can submit a visa application in Tashkent:

  • citizens of Uzbekistan;
  • foreign nationals who legally reside in Uzbekistan on a long-term basis.

Foreign citizens must provide documents confirming long-term residence in Uzbekistan, such as a residence permit or a long-term visa.

Documents required for a tourist visa

The Embassy of Japan accepts documents only in paper form.

To apply for a tourist visa, you need:

  • international passport;
  • copy of the passport’s first page;
  • visa application form in two copies;
  • photo (45×35 mm);
  • employment certificate and proof of income;
  • bank statement;
  • flight reservation;
  • travel itinerary in Japan;
  • hotel booking or host information.

A travel itinerary usually includes travel dates, cities, hotels, and a day-by-day plan.

If the trip is paid for by another person, you must additionally provide the sponsor’s documents and proof of relationship. The embassy warns that submitted documents and certificates are not returned.

All documents must be prepared in A4 format. The embassy also asks applicants not to staple papers or attach them with paper clips.

How much money do you need to confirm for the trip

The embassy does not specify a minimum amount, so applicants usually base it on the trip length and expected expenses. However, the applicant memo states that foreigners traveling in Japan typically need a daily budget of around $100–150 per day, excluding accommodation.

To confirm financial status, the embassy requires:

  • a bank reference letter;
  • a bank statement showing transactions for the last three months.
Bank certificate showing account turnover
Employment certificate

The consulate may also request an employment certificate indicating the applicant’s position, work experience, and salary, or tax documents from my.gov.uz . The employment certificate can be obtained through the personal account on the portal.

How to fill out the Japan visa application form

The Japan visa application form must be completed in English. It includes personal details, travel route, employment information, and accommodation details in Japan. Mistakes, inconsistent spelling of names, or empty fields may delay the review process.

In the first part of the form, you must indicate:

  • surname and given name exactly as written in the passport;
  • date and place of birth;
  • citizenship;
  • passport number and validity period;
  • home address and phone number;
  • occupation and place of work.

In the “Other names” field, you must list previous surnames or other names, if applicable. If none, leave the field blank.

In the travel section, you must specify the purpose of visit, entry date, expected length of stay, arrival airport, airline, and hotel address or host information.

If your route includes multiple cities, it is better to attach a separate day-by-day itinerary. The Japanese consulate pays attention to whether the travel plan is realistic.

The guarantor section in Japan is not always required. If the trip is tourist-related and accommodation is booked at a hotel, these fields are usually left blank. If the applicant is invited by a private individual or company, you must provide the inviting party’s name, address, phone number, residence status, and place of work.

At the end of the form, there is a section with questions about criminal record, deportation, and visa violations. You must answer “Yes” or “No”. If the answer is “Yes”, you must provide an explanation. A common mistake is leaving these fields blank.

A recent color photo (45×35 mm) must be attached to the form. The photo must be taken on a light background, without glasses or headwear.

The applicant must sign the form at the bottom of the second page. The signature must match the one in the passport. Without a signature, the documents will not be accepted.

How to submit documents

Documents for a Japan visa are submitted to the Embassy of Japan in Tashkent either personally or through a representative with a power of attorney.

The embassy uses an online appointment system for the consular section. Appointments are usually available about one week ahead. If the form contains errors on the submission day or the document package is incomplete, the application will not be accepted and you will need to book another appointment.

Documents are accepted on weekdays from 09:30 to 12:30.

If online booking is unavailable, documents may be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. In this case, the applicant comes to the embassy with all documents and writes their passport number into the applicants’ list.

After checking the documents, consular staff issue a receipt confirming the application was accepted. Without this receipt, the application is not considered submitted. The receipt is also required to collect the passport after the visa decision.

Passport collection is available on weekdays from 14:30 to 17:00.

  • Currently, the embassy accepts no more than 20 applicants per day.
  • Tourist companies can submit a maximum of five applications per company per day.

The embassy does not require mandatory medical insurance, but an insurance policy may strengthen the application package — especially if the trip is long or includes domestic flights within Japan.

How much does a Japan visa cost for Uzbekistan citizens

For Uzbekistan citizens, a Japan visa is issued free of charge — no consular fee is required.

If documents are submitted through a travel agency, you only pay the agency service fee. The cost depends on the agency and usually includes document review and assistance with submission.

How long does the visa process take

The standard processing time for a Japan visa is 10 working days after the documents are accepted.

However, the review may take several weeks or even months if the consulate requests additional documents, invites the applicant for an interview, or starts additional verification of the trip and finances.

During the holiday season, processing times may increase due to a high number of applications.

Why the embassy may refuse to accept documents for a Japan visa

The Embassy of Japan may refuse to accept documents even before reviewing the application. This means the application will not be registered and no receipt will be issued. In that case, the applicant must correct the mistakes and submit the documents again.

Most often, documents are not accepted due to an incomplete package, mistakes in the form, or violation of submission rules.

1. Incomplete set of documents

If the applicant does not provide all required documents, the application will not be accepted. The embassy specifically emphasizes that the package must be complete on the day of submission.

Common missing documents include:

  • travel itinerary;
  • bank statement;
  • employment certificate or proof of income;
  • copy of the passport’s first page;
  • proof of accommodation.

2. Errors or missing information in the application form

Even a small mistake may lead to refusal. Forms are often returned if:

  • fields are left blank;
  • travel dates do not match the itinerary;
  • hotel address or contact details are incorrect;
  • name and surname do not match the passport spelling.

3. Documents submitted by a representative without a power of attorney

If another person submits the documents, a signed power of attorney is required. Without the original power of attorney, the application will not be accepted.

4. Passport issues

The embassy may refuse to accept documents if:

  • there are no blank pages for the visa;
  • the passport is damaged;
  • the passport validity period is too short (formally, the rule depends on the case, but in practice the embassy may request a passport valid for the entire duration of the trip).

5. Reapplying too soon after a refusal

If the previous application was refused, the embassy may not accept a new application until the required waiting period has passed.

6. Applying outside the place of residence

Documents are accepted at the Embassy of Japan in Tashkent from:

  • citizens of Uzbekistan;
  • foreign nationals legally residing in Uzbekistan long-term (for example, with a residence permit or long-term visa).

If a person lives in another country and cannot confirm long-term residence in Uzbekistan, the embassy may refuse to accept the application.

7. Application already under review at another consulate

If documents have already been submitted to another Japanese consulate, a second submission in Tashkent may be rejected until the review is completed.

8. Violating appointment or queue rules

According to embassy instructions, documents may not be accepted if the applicant:

  • lost the queue ticket;
  • transferred the ticket to another person;
  • violated order at the entrance;
  • missed their call and did not return on time.

When can you apply again

If a visa is refused, you can reapply for the same purpose of travel only after 6 months.

Exceptions are possible if circumstances have significantly changed or the trip is related to humanitarian reasons.
