The document, approved by a majority of member states, underscores the UN’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, including its territorial waters. The authors of the resolution welcomed efforts by the United States and European countries aimed at halting the military confrontation.
A total of 107 countries voted in favor of the resolution, while 12 voted against. Those opposing the document included Russia, Belarus, Cuba, Nicaragua, Iran, North Korea and several African states. Another 51 countries abstained.
Among the abstaining states were Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Turkmenistan did not participate in the vote.
Notably, the United States also abstained, despite providing assistance to Ukraine and actively calling for mediation between Kyiv and Moscow to end hostilities.
The session at which the resolution was adopted was convened at the initiative of Ukraine, with support from Denmark, Latvia, Greece, the United Kingdom and France. The vote coincided with the fourth anniversary of Russia launching a war on the territory of its neighboring state.
In addition to reaffirming Ukraine’s territorial integrity, the resolution reiterates calls for an immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia. It urges the establishment of a comprehensive and lasting peace in accordance with international law.
The document also calls for a complete exchange of prisoners of war, the release of individuals unlawfully detained, and the return of civilians who were forcibly displaced or deported, including children.
