Tashkent metro to introduce distance-based fare payment system by 2027
The Tashkent metro is set to overhaul its ticketing infrastructure by implementing a new variable fare system based on distance traveled, according to a recent presidential decree aimed at improving the overall efficiency of the capital's subway operations.
The upcoming payment model establishes three core frameworks for commuters. Passengers will pay fares calculated directly by the distance they travel or the specific number of stations they pass through. Additionally, the revised structure will incorporate targeted transit discounts for specified categories of citizens. To provide greater financial flexibility for regular commuters, transport authorities will also introduce short-term and long-term subscription passes, including daily, weekly, and monthly travel packages.
The transition to the new payment mechanism is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027. Under the timeline set by the decree, relevant officials must draft detailed technical and financial proposals within the next six months. These plans will be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers for final approval following formal coordination with the supervisory board of Tashkent Metro JSC.
This modernization program follows earlier infrastructure plans to enhance consumer convenience across the subterranean transit network. The government previously authorized the gradual installation of automated vending machines and small retail kiosks throughout various subway stations. This commercial expansion is designed to improve the passenger experience and will be rolled out incrementally through the end of 2028.
