Japan deports two Uzbek nationals over student visa overstays
The Immigration Services Agency of Japan deported two citizens of Uzbekistan on May 15 for residing in the country illegally.
According to a statement from the Embassy of Japan in Tashkent, both individuals originally arrived in Japan on student visas. However, they remained in the country unlawfully after their visas expired, leading to their detention and subsequent removal by Japanese law enforcement authorities.
The Japanese Embassy emphasized that student visas are granted strictly for educational purposes and do not permit holders to engage in full-time employment or income-generating activities. Officials warned that strict legal actions, including arrest, detention in immigration facilities, and forced deportation, are consistently applied to anyone found living or working in the country illegally.
Furthermore, the Japanese government shares information regarding immigration violators with the Government of Uzbekistan. Consequently, individuals deported for violating migration rules may face additional legal consequences or administrative measures from local authorities upon their return home.
The embassy also addressed widespread misinformation and rumors suggesting that foreigners can secure long-term residency or work permits in Japan simply by applying for refugee status. The diplomatic mission clarified that submitting asylum applications solely for economic or employment purposes is prohibited. If a refugee status application is rejected, applicants face immediate detention in an immigration center and mandatory deportation.
Uzbek citizens are strongly urged to exercise caution and remain vigilant against deceptive employment offers or intermediaries promising easy work opportunities in Japan.
